Mental Health & Substance Abuse

About Your Benefit
The Harvard University Group Health Plan (HUGHP) behavioral health benefit for mental health and substance abuse services is managed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA).

  • You do not need a referral from your Primary Care Provider to obtain behavioral health services.
  • No authorization is needed from BCBSMA for the initial 12 outpatient behavioral health visits per calendar year. Visits 13 and beyond will require prior authorization from BCBSMA.
  • All visits are subject to the conditions, exclusions, limitations and copayments under your policy.
  • To ensure full coverage for outpatient visits (after your $15 copayment), remember to present your HUGHP/BCBS member ID card to your provider.
  • HUGHP POS members who choose a provider who does not participate in the BCBSMA Managed Care Behavioral Health Network are subject to co-insurance. Note: your out-of-network provider may bill you the difference between his or her charge for services and the amount the HUGHP POS pays for those particular services.
